Romans, Venetians, Ottomans, and Austro-Hungarians left their mark. From Diocletian’s Palace in Split to Dubrovnik’s medieval walls, history is not confined to museums—it is part of daily life.  Scars of the 1990s war are still present, but so is enduring optimism.

Traditions thrive in local festivals, klapa singing, Moreska (sword dancing), and centuries-old customs like olive harvesting and lavender distilling. People still gather at cafés to talk politics, life, and sports. 

Coastal areas reflect Mediterranean influences (grilled fish, olive oil, rosemary), while inland dishes are heartier, with Austro-Hungarian roots (roasts, stews, dumplings). Don’t miss pašticada (braised beef), black risotto, and soparnik (savory pie). 

Music is deeply woven into life—from klapa singing (a cappella harmony groups) echoing through stone alleys to Zadar's Sea Organ that plays music created by waves and open-air performances in historic squares. 

Art is grounded in its history including Roman mosaics, magnificent ancient architectural ruins, and Renaissance stonework.

A geographic jewel: 1,000+ islands, limestone cliffs, Plitvice’s turquoise waterfalls, and mountainous backcountry. Locals love nature—swimming, hiking, sailing, or just relaxing on pebbled beaches. 

 Predominantly Roman Catholic, with visible traditions around saints' days, processions, weddings, and church attendance. Spirituality also exists in respect for nature, ancestors, and national history. 

  Croatian (Hrvatski) is a Slavic language with Latin roots in its script. While many speak English, especially younger people and in tourist areas, local greetings and pleasantries are appreciated.
